While Mahale is renowned as a sanctuary for chimpanzees, with approximately 700 of these remarkable primates divided into 14 groups, it's not the only star of the show. Leopards, blue duikers, red-tailed monkeys, and red colobus monkeys accompany the chimps in this natural paradise. The most common way to reach Mahale is by taking a flight to the park's airstrip from Dar es Salaam or Arusha.

The dry season, from June to October, is the ideal time for chimpanzee trekking. This period is when the terrain is drier and the chances of primate sightings are high.

The minimum age for trekking is typically 12 years, and it is essential to be physically fit for the activity.

In addition to chimpanzees, Mahale is home to yellow baboons, red colobus monkeys, and a variety of bird species.
